Atabeygazi Camii (Atabeygazi Mosque - A.K.A Kırkdirekli Mosque)
Forty-pillared Mosque of Conquest
Atabeygazi Mosque was built in 1273 by Atabey Muzaffereddin Yavlak Aslan. It is the city’s oldest known mosque.
It is popularly referred to as “Kırk Direkli Cami” (Mosque with Forty-Pillars). It is thought that Kastamonu Castle was taken from the Byzantines on Friday and the first Friday prayer was performed in this mosque. For this reason, the mosque is known as the Fetih Camii (Mosque of Conquest) and symbolizes the conquest of the city.
It is among the rare structures that have survived from the Middle Ages in Anatolia.
