Spiritual architect of Kastamonu
One of the most important places to visit in Kastamonu, Hz. Pîr Şeyh Şaban-ı Velî complex (Hadrat Pir Sheikh Shaban Wali) is one of the most important historical and spiritual centers of Anatolia with its mosque, tomb, lodge, library, staff water, water-tank with a fountain and lodge houses.
Şeyh Şaban-ı Velî is considered by the Sufis to be the fourth great saint and guardian of Anatolia after Mevlana, Haji Bektash Veli, Haji Bayram Veli.
Hz. Pîr (Hadrat Pir), who passed away in 1568, trained three hundred and sixty apprentices in his place and sent them in all directions to show people the true path.
The mosque was built on a date before 1490 by Seyyid Sünnetî Efendi.
People from many parts of Turkey visit the complex every year to visit the tomb of Şeyh Şaban-ı Velî, who is considered to be one of the great Anatolian Saints, and to drink the staff water, which is believed to be healing.
The tomb was built in 1611, the lodge houses in 1845 and the water-tank with a fountain in 1900.
In the Foundation Museum of Hz. Pîr Şeyh Şaban-ı Velî, there are many items belonging to the period when Hz. Pîr lived, a thousand-year-old Qur’an and Turkey’s richest carpet collection.
It invites visitors to a spiritual journey with its museum and outbuildings where the historical course of Islamic Sufism in Anatolia can be seen.
